"Doreen" is a early/mid example of one of the most successful 40' performance, premium cruiser racers built in the US. She's hull number 63 out of 230, nicely equipped with some unique features (self-tacking jib) and a cockpit table, along with some much loved niceties such as radar. J/120s 's are a well known entity and greatly admired for their build quality, brilliant deck layout designed and executed by a design team of highly experienced sailors, quality and oversized sail handling gear such as winches, and a safe, clean, and highly functional interior. The transom is a "scooped out" design which accommodates an exceptionally accessible swim ladder and easy boarding from an inflatable. The adjustable backstay and dynamically adjustable jib/genoa leads work together to depower the entire rig entirely from the cockpit, helping to avoid reefing in many cases. The previous owner of this boat had a custom self-tacking jib installed and it's beautifully designed and installed. It's hard to imagine a better upgrade if short handed or even single handed sailing is your goal. But perhaps the single biggest feature of a J/120 is the steering. It's extremely light, very responsive, and turns inside its own length making emergency, evasive maneuvers effortless, predictable and precise. This is a perfect boat for seasoned sailors looking to move up from a J/105, or downsizing from a 45 footer for easier sail handling as the loads are far less, especially the headsails which are a fraction of the size. Another market these are ideal for would be young families. Getting into a truly exciting boat will keep the kids engaged and excited, plenty of room below for a family of up to six, and yet not break the bank.
